Default NBA Playoffs also known as LeBron/Kobe love fest

Bulls/Celtics with another classic game last night.

Brad Miller should have took the jumper instead of driving it though

I think that should've been a flagrant 1. Rondo was nowhere near the ball.

It will also be interesting to see if Howard gets suspended for game 6. That was a pretty bad elbow. Props to Dalembert for showing a hard jaw. You know Sideshow Bob would still be down.

Screw Howard for a cheap foul like that. People can get their faces rearranged when guys as big as him throw their elbows like that. Reminds me of Malone...

B Simmons take on the Bulls/Celts series after 5 games

Bill Simmons: The Sports Guy answers key questions about the 2009 NBA playoffs - ESPN

Quote:
Q: Should Rajon Rondo have been whistled for a flagrant foul at the end of Game 5?

A: The short answer: Yes. The long answer: No.

OK, you're confused. Not to sound like Coach Finstock, but there are five laws in the NBA. The first is that two players can only feud because someone owed someone else money from a card game and didn't pay, or because someone slept with someone else's girlfriend or steady hookup. The second is that everyone has to pretend Kobe Bryant is a good guy at all times, even if it means lying to family members, friends and media members or convincing Spike Lee to make a full-fledged gushing documentary about him. The third is the NBA doesn't "fix" games per se; the league just "orchestrates" them a little with referee assignments, and teams are not allowed to complain. The fourth is Stu Jackson and Ahmad Rashad must always remain employed with jobs that are well beyond their means. And the fifth? The last 15 seconds of a fourth quarter or overtime morph into rugby rules and it's just implicitly understood.

Dwight Howard of Orlando Magic suspended one game for elbow - ESPN

Howard suspended and he broke Courtney Lee's nasal cavity and he's out for awhile too.

There was no way the refs would make the right call and give a flagrant to Rondo on that play.

As for Howard, man, that was one fucking stupid move. What in the hell was he thinking?

I agree about Rondo. They ought to give him a flagrant. But it's darn hard to do it within the last few seconds. I doubt that Rondo even tried to make a play on the ball. Not to mention that he drw blood. That's outomatic 5 minutes in hockey. So, it would seem, it warranted a flagrant.

About Howard, indeed, a very stupid move. Maybe he is serious frustrated by constant hackery.

On such a play, in the waning minutes in a no-layups game, however, you can justify and expect a flagrant if the foul was indeed flagrant. Players know to at least make it look as if they are going for the ball, and if they don't, then it's clearly the call to make. It's not like how a regular foul is no longer a foul because the rule is clear.

Simmons continues with a good ref rant

Q: As we near the two-year anniversary of the Tim Donaghy scandal, is the putrid situation with NBA officiating getting any better?

A: Nah, it's as bad as ever. It's really, really bad. It's "I feel dumb loving this league so much" bad. It's "you lied to us when you said you'd fix this after Donaghy" bad. Let's forget about the consistent incompetence for a second -- it's not like we didn't know the playoffs wouldn't make us want to not punch a wall twice a night, and yes, that was a quadruple negative.

Here's what bothers me: The league promised us Donaghy was a rogue official, promised to clean things up, hired a new leader (the Sarge, Robert Johnson) and promised to get better. The media accepted the league's "investigation" at face value and moved on. (I blame myself as well.) So how can the following two things happen in Round 1?

No. 1: Joey Crawford reffed Game 3 of the Spurs-Mavs series in San Antonio. This guy was suspended for flipping out on Tim Duncan last season. The Spurs are convinced he hates them. Their 2007-08 season ended because of Crawford's non-call on Brent Barry's 3-pointer against the Lakers. There are seven other playoff matchups. How does this guy end up getting assigned to Game 3 in San Antonio? Why even risk it?

No. 2. On St. Patrick's Day, Doc Rivers and longtime nemesis Bill Kennedy got into such a staredown/screaming tiff that Doc was fined $25,000 and Kennedy was fined as well. Heading into Game 4, I was texting my Boston buddies, "The league needs this series to go seven, and they will screw us on the officials. You watch." One of your three officials? That's right ... Mr. Bill Kennedy. It was like seeing Ike and Tina get back together. I mean, why even go there? And that's before we mentioned the Boston Herald's report that two of the three members of Kennedy's Game 4 crew live in Chicago and greeted families after the game who were wearing Bulls gear. No, really.

Simmons does a good job talking about that, and in general about the Dark Side of Stern, without coming off like TJ or a conspiracy theorist. And what he says is still pretty damning.

That said, I'm enjoying reading Simmons moreso these days given he has to dial down expectations for a repeat run. It's fun to watch him excuse it away. He did have a recent passage about appreciating the futile '87 Celts title defense in which the team got its all out of an injured and aging bunch. Our 05 group wasn't quite that heroic, but they did face a fair amount of adversity, what with the brawl and LB taking half the year off and all, and even tho they were flip switchers they really did have an amazing aura of invincibility and were pretty close to a historic title run.

Whenever a top player goes down or is injured, that pretty much ruins his team's playoff chances. It happened at least two times to the Pistons - Billups last year - Sheed the year Miami won the championship (he was playing on one leg and that just killed us) - and I think Rip was hurt the year before. When we won the championship in 2004, Sheed's plantar faciitus remarkably healed by the later rounds of the playoffs - and Malone ended up being crippled instead. In 1987, the Pistons had VJ and Dantley's head collide like coconuts giving each a big concussion and knocking them out against Boston - who we probably would have beaten that year, the Isiah pass intercepted by Bird notwithstanding. In 1988, Isiah's twisted ankle killed us against the Lakers, and the next year Magic and Byron Scott went out with hammy's.

Injuries are the key factor in tons of NBA playoff series.

Add Chicago to the list of teams that are going to challenge us next year. I really like how hard they play.

Portland going fishing... how infuriated is Blazer nation for not drafting Durant?

Roy/Durant duo with that solid supporting cast... man, they missed out.

I know, I know; still a great season for them but the possibility of Durant on that Blazer team is hard to look past

Not fouling before Allen got off a three pointer to tie and send the game into yet another overtime was a gigantically stupid move on Chicago's part. They're damn lucky they were able to pull it out after that.

Also, Noah is a good player and has been for a while. He's not a scorer and some people like to make fun of how he looks but he rebounds very well and defends. He's seriously underrated.

challenge us for what?

we are so far behind them at this point it is not even funny. As this team sits now we will be lucky not to be bottom 3 in the league.

By the way the love fest for Wade is in full bloom.

dude was getting fouls like there was no tomorrow. mean while miami could almost tackle hawk players with no call....

after al the physical play...they really have let them play in a few of these series...similar to the old playoffs...losing teeth, black eyes...

The fact that Rondo can fragrently foul everyone without getting punished is a joke too. That's a crock.

Rondo is, I think, right now, the second-best PG in the league. It's Paul, Rose and Rondo on the top tier. Rondo is certainly the best two-way PG in the league.

I still think much of Rondo's (admittedly great) success is because he's usually on the floor with two or three HOFers that draw the inevitable attention. He's very good, but I'd rather have a few guys before him, including Deron Williams and if we're talking two-way guys, Brandon Roy. Doesn't help that he's starting to seem like kind of a thug.

Those numbers in the Chicago series are sick, though.

I'd take Roy over Rondo but not Deron. True about playing with HOFers, but it's also sped up his development. He's so much better for this experience. Guys like Perkins and Davis are too.

Pierce and Allen aren't making Rondo get five boards a game and playing ball hawk man defense. He still can't hit an open fifteen footer though.

I like Rondo - but he's not an elite guard at this point because he can't shoot. He thrives playing on a team with great outside shooters because he's a great penetrator and finisher and passer. He does a fine job at the point. But if he were playing on a team that didn't have great great shooters - Allen and Pierce and KG and Hause and really fine tough rebounders that can do damage inside as well - Perkins, Big Baby, then he wouldn't have anywhere near the openings to get to the rim.

He may be on his way to being an elite PG, but he's not yet in Willliams' class or Paul's or, IMO, Chauncey's and Devin Harris's class either. He's right in the mix of great young guards in this league looking to emerge. Frankly, I like Rose's chances of getting to that level more than Rondo's because Rose is bigger and stronger, just as fast and looks to me like the better shooter.

I'd have put Stuckey in that mix, but if we're talking about him as a combo guard, he's now competing in the category of players like Joe Johnson and Roy and Ellis.

Well, Rondo is merely averaging a triple double in the playoffs... Sure, he's got good shooters but every guard needs actual good players around him to be effective. That says nothing whatsoever. Stuckey had good shooters around him here.

So how is Stuckey looking compared to Joe Johnson, Roy, and Ellis? maybe he can be an elite combo guard in five years.

I agree about him attacking the basket. The fact that he thinks about that first instinctually is why he isn't a good point guard. I just hope learns to finish better, and to shoot to make his drives effective.

everytime I watch Rondo play I can't help but notice how much grit he plays with - something I rarely see with Stuckey.

the guy just wants to WIN.

sure Stuckey's been thru a lot this season, but i'd like to see him with some more enthusiasm than this:

Rondo has some of Isiah or Laimbeer in him.

It's true, he crossed the line a couple times, but he seems to show that fiery desire to beat his opponent.

I was not in agreement at the time, but the first round REALLY needs to be a 5 game series. It won't happen because owners won't give up that extra home game, but man, the NBA playoffs are just too damn long.

It's been over two weeks since the first round started and we have 3 more rounds to go. The playoffs are just too damn long. There are way too many off days in between games.

I agree. I know the NBA wants every game on TV, but the first round drags on way too long.

Chauncey and the Nuggs go up 1-0 on the Mavs. They're looking good to make the Western conference finals. Go Chauncey!

as I predicted, Chauncey will look great up until he faces a sub-par tandem of Fisher/Farmar.

I hope he doesn't because I'd love to see an upset of the Lakers/Cavs finals... but then we'd have a chance of Melo winning a title... It's tough to say what I can stomach more.
