: 0 For This Post 0 Total | On such a play, in the waning minutes in a no-layups game, however, you can justify and expect a flagrant if the foul was indeed flagrant. Players know to at least make it look as if they are going for the ball, and if they don't, then it's clearly the call to make. It's not like how a regular foul is no longer a foul because the rule is clear. Last edited by hack; 04-30-2009 at 04:30 AM. |

: 0 For This Post 1 Total | Simmons continues with a good ref rant Q: As we near the two-year anniversary of the Tim Donaghy scandal, is the putrid situation with NBA officiating getting any better? A: Nah, it's as bad as ever. It's really, really bad. It's "I feel dumb loving this league so much" bad. It's "you lied to us when you said you'd fix this after Donaghy" bad. Let's forget about the consistent incompetence for a second -- it's not like we didn't know the playoffs wouldn't make us want to not punch a wall twice a night, and yes, that was a quadruple negative. Here's what bothers me: The league promised us Donaghy was a rogue official, promised to clean things up, hired a new leader (the Sarge, Robert Johnson) and promised to get better. The media accepted the league's "investigation" at face value and moved on. (I blame myself as well.) So how can the following two things happen in Round 1? No. 1: Joey Crawford reffed Game 3 of the Spurs-Mavs series in San Antonio. This guy was suspended for flipping out on Tim Duncan last season. The Spurs are convinced he hates them. Their 2007-08 season ended because of Crawford's non-call on Brent Barry's 3-pointer against the Lakers. There are seven other playoff matchups. How does this guy end up getting assigned to Game 3 in San Antonio? Why even risk it? No. 2. On St. Patrick's Day, Doc Rivers and longtime nemesis Bill Kennedy got into such a staredown/screaming tiff that Doc was fined $25,000 and Kennedy was fined as well. Heading into Game 4, I was texting my Boston buddies, "The league needs this series to go seven, and they will screw us on the officials. You watch." One of your three officials? That's right ... Mr. Bill Kennedy. It was like seeing Ike and Tina get back together. I mean, why even go there? And that's before we mentioned the Boston Herald's report that two of the three members of Kennedy's Game 4 crew live in Chicago and greeted families after the game who were wearing Bulls gear. No, really. |

And what he says is still pretty damning. That said, I'm enjoying reading Simmons moreso these days given he has to dial down expectations for a repeat run. It's fun to watch him excuse it away. He did have a recent passage about appreciating the futile '87 Celts title defense in which the team got its all out of an injured and aging bunch. Our 05 group wasn't quite that heroic, but they did face a fair amount of adversity, what with the brawl and LB taking half the year off and all, and even tho they were flip switchers they really did have an amazing aura of invincibility and were pretty close to a historic title run. |

: 0 For This Post 0 Total | Not fouling before Allen got off a three pointer to tie and send the game into yet another overtime was a gigantically stupid move on Chicago's part. They're damn lucky they were able to pull it out after that. Also, Noah is a good player and has been for a while. He's not a scorer and some people like to make fun of how he looks but he rebounds very well and defends. He's seriously underrated. |

we are so far behind them at this point it is not even funny. As this team sits now we will be lucky not to be bottom 3 in the league. By the way the love fest for Wade is in full bloom. dude was getting fouls like there was no tomorrow. mean while miami could almost tackle hawk players with no call.... after al the physical play...they really have let them play in a few of these series...similar to the old playoffs...losing teeth, black eyes...

: 0 For This Post 0 Total | I still think much of Rondo's (admittedly great) success is because he's usually on the floor with two or three HOFers that draw the inevitable attention. He's very good, but I'd rather have a few guys before him, including Deron Williams and if we're talking two-way guys, Brandon Roy. Doesn't help that he's starting to seem like kind of a thug. Those numbers in the Chicago series are sick, though. |

He may be on his way to being an elite PG, but he's not yet in Willliams' class or Paul's or, IMO, Chauncey's and Devin Harris's class either. He's right in the mix of great young guards in this league looking to emerge. Frankly, I like Rose's chances of getting to that level more than Rondo's because Rose is bigger and stronger, just as fast and looks to me like the better shooter. I'd have put Stuckey in that mix, but if we're talking about him as a combo guard, he's now competing in the category of players like Joe Johnson and Roy and Ellis.

: 0 For This Post 0 Total | I was not in agreement at the time, but the first round REALLY needs to be a 5 game series. It won't happen because owners won't give up that extra home game, but man, the NBA playoffs are just too damn long. It's been over two weeks since the first round started and we have 3 more rounds to go. The playoffs are just too damn long. There are way too many off days in between games. |

I hope he doesn't because I'd love to see an upset of the Lakers/Cavs finals... but then we'd have a chance of Melo winning a title... It's tough to say what I can stomach more. |
