But none of us put it out there. Just saying, you don't always have to hit what's on the tee. Sometimes it's best to walk back to the dugout and enjoy the Capri sun with the rest of the team. I was born there...and spent a brief few years (that I do not recall, in any way) there before moving to Detroit. Toledo is where I am from, so it must be OK. I heard they even stopped all the rioting.

I figure most calls are false alarms and burned toast but every so often you get a big one. Is that a wrong impression? Another q.... We had to call an ambulance for my son and they sent a giant fire ladder truck. What is the point? We told them that he was five and on the ground floor of the house. Why the giant truck? Sorry, just a couple of stupid questions. |

Depends on the district Dave. I have worked in the inner city for 16 of my 19 years. We stay pretty busy overall. Ask King what a dump this city is. We have days where we have 3-4 working fires and miss out on others. We can go weeks with-out a good fire.(we have 3 shifts, when I say we, I mean my shift, my engine house) The overwhelming majority of our fires are vacant arson fires. The city wanted a vacant survey a few years ago, we did a 6 block area and counted 90. The city is littered with vacant houses. Other engine houses, we have 17 in the city, can go months with-out a good fire. Sylvania township, where I live, probably has less than 10 working fires a year. Overall, My engine, my shift, can have 100+ fire we go to in a year. I probably have had over 2000 so far. The reason the ladder truck showed up is because they were the closest, in service, first responder. The rig doesn't matter. Most likely there is a double company near you, an engine(pumper) and a ladder. The engine was probably out so they send the next closest. In most systems, an infrequent 911 caller like yourself, thinks they are getting an ambulance, when in fact they are getting the nearest fire truck. Those first responders will determine the severity of the situation and arrange proper transportation.(BLS, ALS, private auto, cab) I have said this before, the entire system is set up so no one gets sued. Seemed like overkill. I was guessing that it was precautionary in case they needed to break a door or window or something. |

My guess is simultaneous dispatch, ambulance and first responder.(the ambulance just beat them there) We tried that for a while, our run volume for the ambulances forced a different approach.

Good to hear. Another possibility, your run got classified as a breathing difficulty, that puts it in the ALS-advanced life support category. The transport rig, what you refer to as the ambulance, was the ALS transport. Not many systems would only send the one rig (2 people) for that kind of run. The chance of things going badly is too great. Again, no one wants to get sued.
