I agree. Obviously, I am rooting hard for him. But he's not very classy.

It's always seemed to me that regarding athletics there's a lot of rigid thinking going on, and not much of an awareness that there's people outside Ann Arbor who might also have some good ideas on how to run a football program.

The jury is still out for me as far as RichRod goes. He wasn't an instant hit like when I first heard John Beilein talk but I'm willing to give him a chance. I wasn't around when Bo first took over but I think he was a hardass that rubbed some people the wrong way as well.

When I was a kid, I accidentally kicked his kid Schemmy in the shin at a soccer camp and sent him crying. When I found out who he was, I was afraid I was going to feel the wrath of Bo.

That thought WOULD be pretty scary to a little kid. Imagine a thunderous rap on your door and Bo Schembechler standing on the porch, pissed.

He'd probably thank you for helping to kick the weakness out of Shemmy's body.

Yesterday provided a glimmer of hope for this season. Tate Forcier, in his first game looked better than all the "best" moments of QB play we saw last year out of Sheridan and Threet and Robinson looked like he can at least be an occasional game-breaker. The D looked better and the kicking game was very solid.

Yes, it was against Western but last year's team probably would've lost to Western or at least not blown them out.

The domers will be a whole different deal but I think we have a better shot of beating them than I did 24 hours ago.

I still don't expect the 2nd year leap that the basketball team had but I do think my 7 win prediction could be exceeded by a game....or even 2.

Our new top WR wearing #21 is out but hopefully some other Wolverine will step up with this kind of magic.

Michigan State loses to Central Michigan 29-27. Michigan beats Notre Dame 38-34. The world makes sense again.

That interception Forcier had almost cost them the game, but the kid was 95% brilliant out there. He's a talent. Big, big win for UM.

Hey, Michigan officially has a quarterback of the future. For a freshman, he's done a tremendous job. Every player makes mistakes, but it's how he recovers and plays under pressure that has distinguished him.

So what was that about Notre Dame winning the national title this year? LOL

I think that interception may have been the receiver's fault. Whatever. As a CMU grad and a Michigan slappy, it's been a great freakin' day of football!

Oh hells yes! First game I've gone to in 6 years. Couldn't have asked for a more thrilling afternoon. What a game, and what a QB! It's probably time to start looking at making Denard Robinson a slash type, because Forcier looks absolutely wonderful. That was his game almost entirely.

One thing I don't get about the coaching switch is why the defense has to suck this bad. Did Lloyd really leave the cupboard that bare? I was under the impression that he was still doing a good job getting recruits. Surely he lost some kids who figured there'd be a coaching change, but c'mon -- no pressure all game, no pass coverage, they made ND's offense line look like the Cowboys' of the mid 90s, and the second-string safety is a walkon?

Either way, still, what a day to bask in it...

It's going to be a long season unless the defense can gel. But it sure was an exciting game, the Wolverines are competitive again. And think how good Forcier will be in a year or two.

The D-Line got pushed around quite a bit yesterday. Roh is an interesting player with his quickness, but boy is he skinny. I'd really like for him to get up to 250+ for next year playing the "Quick" End/LB position. If William Campbell is ready to play next year, I'd like to see Campbell and Martin at DT and NT (doesn't matter which one plays where) with Van Bergen replacing Graham at the Power DE.

Obi Ezeh didn't seem to do much. I'd really like to see JB Fitzgerald step up and beat him out.

The lack of depth at CB and S is scary. Cissoko was really getting burned by Floyd. Floyd is a stud, but I wonder if Cissoko was hurt. He looked slow and tentative. Not what you want out of a 5-9 CB. The other DB's are mostly walk-ons and freshmen. I was surprised to see the walk-on Kovacs playing ahead of Vlad Emilien when Mike Williams went down. I'm not sure which position some of the other freshman safeties are playing. I think Isiah Bell and Mike Jones might be moving down to LB to play Stevie Brown's mini-Sam. Marvin Robinson is a stud safety coming in next year but some guys think he's a LB too. Hope and pray that Donavan Warren sticks around for his senior year.

I was really impressed with Forcier. Devin Gardner, stud QB coming in next year is physically similar to TP. Probably not quite as athletic but supposedly a more advanced passer than the high school version of Pryor (or hell, maybe the college version given some of the garbage Pryor was throwing last night). Anyway, I hope he redshirts. As a RS freshman, he would compete with Tate and Denard who will presumably both be juniors. If Devin wins the backup QB to Tate, then Denard is free to move to another position full time. He could be a slot guy who runs out of the backfield/takes direct snaps a lot like Percy Harvin. If you're comfortable with both Gardner and Robinson's knowledge of the offense, you can get both on the field quite a bit as WR's and change of pace QB's.

Basically, I think the goal is to get all of those guys really comfortable with the entire offense. Then you get them some reps on a handful of plays (+ trick plays) at WR. There's only so many practice snaps to go around for the QB's, and I feel pretty confident those guys would prefer to get some extra reps at WR while they're waiting for their QB reps.

Now all that being said, I also wonder what was going through Denard's head as he's both watching Tate orchestrate the offense and witnessing the lack of depth at CB/S. A lot of scouts liked Robinson a lot more as a DB than as a QB.

Robinson could go both ways, and from a career standpoint that might be his best move. I just don't see him as a pro style QB; but as a CB on defense and all purpose RB/WR he could really shine.

Either way, I think we're gonna lose some QB commitments this year and next. Who would come here knowing the best they can hope to do for the next 2 years is be a backup or redshirt. Not that I care. Having a solidified QB spot for 3 years minimum is a damn good problem to have.

Yes. I read that going into last season that only 25% of his recruits that represented the Senior class remained. Most were gone before the coaching change. I'm guessing that % still low for this year's Seniors as well. Brandon Graham seems to be the only impact Senior on D. Stevie Brown is okay.

Looking at the roster (124 student-athletes), there are two 5th year Seniors, two true Seniors (Graham and Brown) and four 4th year Juniors on D.

It's easy to imagine going undefeated into E Lansing, but who knows? Things could go south in a hurry. But at this point, it's all giddiness, and that link was wonderfully fun to read.

It's great to have a QB that can actually move around and make plays with his feet if he has too (but who also is showing to be a very good passer as well). Pretty much everybody Lloyd lined up was a statue, except for Henson. Henne, though tough as nails, was dead meat trying to move around and make things happen. So was Navarre.

Hey, I'm no Navarre slappy, but he was a pretty solid QB, despite being a frankenstein. Problem was, those were really good UM teams, that with a better QB, probably would have challenged for BCS titles.

He was just slightly better than awful, I'd say that much. He threw a great deep ball and did absolutely nothing else well, if I recall accurately. I agree that he was the weak link, and perhaps he looks worse in retrospect because the other parts of those teams were so good.

I am not allowed to speak disparagingly about Navarre because moments before he pulled off that half-back pass back to the QB 40 yard gain against Minnesota, I vowed to never speak ill of him again if he pulled off a comeback win in that game. He did, so I don't.

Navarre was an above average college QB. Unfortunately for him, he's not being compared to all college QB's, he's being compared to Harbaugh, Grbac, Collins, Griese, Brady, Henson, and Henne. Navarre was a statute and he had way too many passes batted down at the line, but he had a cannon, lead Michigan to some wins, and he was an NFL backup for a few years. Really bad college QB's don't usually make NFL rosters.

Exactly. He pales in comparison to a pretty damn good group of QBs all around him, but he set all sorts of records (which Henne has since broken) and he was first team all-big ten. He was a good college QB who was really good at one thing (the deep ball) but with some noticeable weaknesses.

He sure was head and shoulders above Threet and Sherriden. For his whole career at Michigan, I'd say he was better than Griese. Griese was good enough his Senior year though. His main strength was not making mistakes.

You're not going to make a lot of mistakes when you're allowed to throw a pass between the hash marks less than ten times in a career. I don't think his strength was not making mistakes, I think he was on an even shorter leash than normal for that period in the Carr era. The nasty interceptions never stopped and nor did the batted-down balls.

Yes, he was an above-average college QB. And, at Michigan, more is expected. Especially given the recent history of QBs outta the school. He never got better. Griese was a wonderful, wonderful QB in his 5th year. A weird guy obviously, as he put it together in the NFL for just a short time too, and maybe that was just Shanahan, but Griese made some miraculous plays in 97.

Eso Akunne Awarded Scholarship for 2009-10 Season

Sept. 16, 2009

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan men's basketball head coach John Beilein announced today (Wednesday, Sept. 16) that freshman walk-on guard Eso Akunne (Ann Arbor, Mich./Gabriel Richard HS) has been awarded a one-year scholarship for the upcoming 2009-10 season.

"Over the last two years, we have been able to reward a deserving few of our walk-on players with scholarship opportunities," said Beilein. "The chance to help players like C.J. Lee, David Merritt or Eric Puls has really been a great privilege. We were recently presented an opportunity to assist another deserving walk-on and have chosen to scholarship Eso Akunne for this academic year."

"I am very grateful to Coach Beilein, his staff and the University of Michigan Athletic Department for the decision to offer me this scholarship opportunity," said Akunne. "Coach talked to me about the past walk-ons, including C.J. Lee, David Merritt and Eric Puls. I realize the responsibility I have in accepting this scholarship offer, and I look forward to putting forth my best effort for the University of Michigan, on and off the court."

Akunne, who finished fifth in the State of Michigan Hal Schram Mr. Basketball award voting, was a four-year starter at nearby Father Gabriel Richard High School. He closed his high school career with a 79-20 record and averaged 17.0 points, 10.9 rebounds and 5.9 assists. The all-time leading scorer with 1,705 career points, he was part of four straight Catholic League titles and helped Gabriel Richard reach the Class B regional final in 2009 and the Class C semifinals in 2008. In 2009, he was an All-State first team selection by the Associated Press, the Detroit News and the Detroit Free Press as well as the Ann Arbor News Area Player of the Year.

With the preseason in full swing for the Wolverines, the Maize and Blue will tip off the 2009-10 season, as both the men's and women's basketball teams will host "Michigan Madness" on Friday, Oct. 16, the first day of practice allowed by the NCAA. The Wolverines play only one exhibition game against Wayne State (Friday, Nov. 6) before opening the regular season Friday, Nov. 14 against Northern Michigan.
