Special Report: Chuck Daly

Awesome link.

Detroit News has posted several archived articles about Coach Daly dating back to his original hire!

Sweet! I can't wait to go through all of those.

Legendary Pistons coach Chuck Daly dies

May 9, 2009

Daly, who died in Jupiter, Florida, had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in February, according to the NBA.

He compiled a 638-437 record in 14 seasons as an NBA coach, and had a massive impact on the game — both as coach of the physical and fight-prone "Bad Boys" Pistons of the late 1980s and as leader of some of basketball's most storied players.

"The Daly family and the entire Detroit Pistons and Palace Sports and Entertainment family is mourning the loss of Chuck Daly," Pistons vice president of public relations Matt Dobek said in a statement.

"Chuck left a lasting impression with everyone he met both personally and professionally and his spirit will live with all of us forever."

Daly led the Pistons to titles in 1989 and 1990, after which he secured a post as head coach of the U.S. men's Olympic team for the 1992 games in Barcelona, where professional players were allowed for the first time.

His "Dream Team" featured superstars Larry Bird, Patrick Ewing, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan and Karl Malone, and has been viewed by many experts as the greatest team every assembled. They romped through the competition winning by an average 43.8 points per game en route to the gold.

"He was a great coach. He knew how to relate to the players," Ewing said on an NBA website. "We had a lot of fun playing for him."

Daly was renowned for getting major stars with disparate personalities such as Dream Team members Jordan and Charles Barkley to work together on the court.

"If you're going to have to beg them to play, it's not going to work," Daly once said.

The man his Detroit players nicknamed "Daddy Rich" for his impeccable suits was credited with turning the lowly Pistons into a perennial powerhouse, having taken them to the playoffs in each of his nine seasons with the team.

"He was a very shrewd guy in his coaching and how he would use his players to gain the team unity that he wanted," fellow Hall of Fame coach Jack Ramsay said according to NBA.com.

"They were good, but I didn't think they were a championship team," Ramsay said of the 1989-1990 Pistons. "I think he got them to be a championship team."

In April, the National Basketball Coaches' Association announced it was dedicating the current 2009 NBA playoffs to Daly, who had been undergoing cancer treatment.

Damn Coach, damn. It can't end this way can it? Mr. D and you and the Pistons in the first round... you said you wanted an Irish wake but damn.

You were one of my childhood heroes, you and Isiah and Billy and Joe, you were all my heroes before I knew why you were my heroes, before I knew what made you heroes. I was just a kid how was I going to know? I just knew we cheered for the Pistons and cursed the guys in red.

But maybe I know now, maybe I'm beginning to understand. Larry Brown had that old nag about playing the right way but looking back I realize Larry was only giving name to a style you helped to define.

Defense is effort and you made sure that both were strong.

Teams are made up of individuals, not robots, that's what makes teams beautiful. You respected individuals and mentored them but you coached a team. A lot of people still don't understand that.

Offense is about using the skills you have wherever you find them. Posting 6'5'' forwards, centers shooting threes, guards sharing responsibilities. Working with what you have, making the best of it.

Losing hurts a lot when it happens and it hurts even more the next day and yet you can't let it stop you. You get up and you stand proud letting the whole world see your torn up heart, letting the whole world know that you aren't going away.

I didn't know it at the time but this is what you were teaching me Coach, this is why you're a hero. We never met, you never told me directly and I never had a chance to thank you but there it is. Thanks Coach.

I thought Mitch mailed in his column this morning if anyone read it.

For a good read, check out Jack McCullom on CNNSI.com. Great read on Daddy Rich and some good personal stories and inside info.

Plus, he kinda looked like Van Morrison. Seriously, coaching matters. He was one of the best. A shame he wasn't a glory hound like Jackson, Brown or Riley, otherwise he'd have been out there trying to win another to cement a legacy. He might have been a better coach than all three.

Nah, Chuck never struck me as the glory hound type. I think he might've taken the Orlando job just because of the money, but I can't blame him there -- he just missed the big money train as a coach, and deserved to get paid.

Very nice that the boys Chuck mentored as young adults were there to take care of him in the end...

TEQUESTA, Fla. -- Chuck Daly's team gathered around him one last time. Bill Laimbeer and Rick Mahorn were side by side on one end, Joe Dumars on the right, Isiah Thomas and Vinnie Johnson standing together a few feet back.

The Bad Boys were together again, not as players but pallbearers who gave their coach a sad, fond farewell.

I didn't see Rodman in any of the funeral photos. I thought he would be there for sure.

I watched Rodman on Celebrity Apprentice and the guy was a nutjob. He needs some AA and anger management classes. He almost kicked Clint Black's ass on the show.

Pallbearers, including Rick Carlisle, second from left, Joe Dumars, fourth from left, and Isiah Thomas, center, carry the casket of Chuck Daly to a funeral service at St. Jude Catholic Church in Tequesta, Fla., on Wednesday, May 13, 2009.

Rodman gave an interview after Coach's death saying how much of a loss it was but I can see him not making it to the funeral.

As much love as a have for the guy, he just doesn't seem to be that strong of a person. The couple of times he came into the club I worked at in LA he was drinking non-alcoholic beer but apparently he's off the wagon.

Maybe Vinnie being there kept him away as well. Who knows?

Dennis doesn't have it in him to make it back to Detroit for any Bad Boys reunion.

I went to "All Time top 50 Pistons," ceremony last year and Rodman was supposed to attend. He backed out at the last second and claimed he missed his flight. When Isiah was on the mic he made it a point to address Dennis. He said something like "You can't keep away forever Dennis, you'll always be a part of the Piston family,"etc.
