I watched Taken the other night, and I highly recommend it. I enjoyed it more than Star Trek or Wolverine. Ex-CIA agent's daughter gets kidnapped, and he kicks ass all over Paris to find her. You can't beat that plot.

Thanks for the recommendation -- I've been hoping it was a good movie. I'm a Neeson fan, too.

I LOVE that movie too. Not better than Star Trek (you must be on crack), but much better than Wolverine.

Not better than The Spirit, as well, presumably.

Star Trek was an odd movie, going into it I thought I would like it as a movie, but not as a Star Trek movie, and that's pretty much my opinion of it. If they'd made up all the characters and aliens and design work I would have still thought it was excellent.

The Spirit was not very good, I've already relented that. Better than Bad Boys II probably, but just barely. ;)

We actually agree about Star Trek, though. I'm not a "Trekker" at all and don't really know much about the mythos. That said, I do think Nimoy's role added a nice touch and did bring a sense of nostalgia that helps the film. But yeah, even if you HATE Star Trek stuff, this is just a great action/sci-fi flick.

I just saw Terminator Salvation. I liked it, even though it was different from the rest of the movies.

Saw Star Trek last night and loved it.

I didn't know anything about the characters going in.

From start to finish, Star Trek is on of the more enjoyable movies I've seen.

Just watched Let the Right One In. It ends well but is generally slow. Its a nice change as far as vampire movies but overall is just pretty slow.

I like it as a character study. Most horror movies never even approach being called a character study!

I dunno, to me it's a fascinating flick.

Both, really. And even the older "caretaker". It's pretty emotionally revealing for a horror film.

Speaking of horror films, if you like horror at all, RUN to see Drag Me To Hell. It's one of the most flat out entertaining horror films ever made. It's creepy, scary, ridiculous, silly, and sublime.

Here's my review:

Yeah, that's why I thought it ended well. I don't know about others but I didn't understand the relationship between her and the caretaker until the ending. I guess if you qualify it every time with 'for a horror film" I can't argue with it. It is deeper then most (maybe all) hack and slashers. Against a wider field, I don't think it stands up so nicely.

I disagree, and it wasn't my intention to qualify it. I think it's a moving and unique film in any genre. But I understand what you're saying. For me, it was the movie that got to me the most out of all of last year's films next to only Slumdog Millionaire and possibly Wall-E. It was my favorite film of last year until I saw Slumdog, in fact, because of that anomalous and unorthodox way of looking at a coming of age story. That it is a horror film is secondary to me, though I do like that there's hope for modern horror to be something more than it has been lately.

Actor David Carradine found dead in Bangkok

BANGKOK – Actor David Carradine, star of the 1970s TV series "Kung Fu" who also had a wide-ranging career in the movies, has been found dead in the Thai capital, Bangkok. A news report said he was found hanged in his hotel room and was believed to have committed suicide.

A spokesman for the U.S. Embassy, Michael Turner, confirmed the death of the 72-year-old actor. He said the embassy was informed by Thai authorities that Carradine died either late Wednesday or early Thursday, but he could not provide further details out of consideration for his family.

The Web site of the Thai newspaper The Nation cited unidentified police sources as saying Carradine was found Thursday hanged in his luxury hotel room.

It said Carradine was in Bangkok to shoot a movie and had been staying at the hotel since Tuesday.

The newspaper said Carradine could not be contacted after he failed to appear for a meal with the rest of the film crew on Wednesday, and that his body was found by a hotel maid at 10 a.m. Thursday morning. The name of the movie was not immediately available.

It said a preliminary police investigation found that he had hanged himself with a cord used with the room's curtains. It cited police as saying he had been dead at least 12 hours and there was no sign that he had been assaulted.

A police officer at Bangkok's Lumpini precinct station would not confirm the identity of the dead man to The Associated Press, but said the luxury Swissotel Nai Lert Park hotel had reported that a male guest killed himself there.

Carradine was a leading member of a venerable Hollywood acting family that included his father, character actor John Carradine, and brother Keith.

In all, he appeared in more than 100 feature films with such directors as Martin Scorsese, Ingmar Bergman and Hal Ashby.

But he was best known for his role as Kwai Chang Caine, a Shaolin priest traveling the 1800s American frontier West in the TV series "Kung Fu," which aired in 1972-75.

He reprised the role in a mid-1980s TV movie and played Caine's grandson in the 1990s syndicated series "Kung Fu: The Legend Continues."

He returned to the top in recent years as the title character in Quentin Tarantino's two-part saga "Kill Bill."

Apparently "his people" say it wasn't a suicide as much as an accidental death while attempting auto erotic asphyxiation.

The sexual thing makes sense. Makes you wonder if someone else was in the room at the time.

Where's the Diddler when you need him? Is that sexual strangulation thing an individual act or is someone else there with you?

Terrible news, he always seemed like a cool guy and someone you would want to get a beer with and kick it with, minus the erotic fantasies.

Yeah, it is really sad. He was a very witty and fun performer. He seemed intelligent and had a good sense of humor to perform in all the B-movies he was in.

He was in Bangkok, the world capital of sex, and yet he had to get his sexual gratification by hanging himself in a closet. Bad decision...

Problem is when a guy ends this way, you can't get the imagery out of your mind. I'll have a hard (OK, spare the jokes) time thinking about him the same way.

Drag Me To Hell... I had high expectations. It was entertaining, that's for sure. Nothing really even remotely scary; I was expecting to have some jumps in there. Nothing.

Hangover was classic. It will be a DVD favorite for years to come

Of the two, I would suggest DMTH for the movies and Hangover for home.

I'm a big Pixar fan; maybe catch UP sometime this week.

If you didn't jump AT ALL during DMTH, you must have ice water just coursing through your veins!

But yeah, super entertaining movie. You HAVE to see it at the theater. Watching it with a big crowd, preferably.

Going to see Hangover tonight.

That might have been it; the crowd was small for DMTH, as I caught it Sunday night. It was a great movie, I just wanted or expected more shock factor. Great ending!

LOL, yeah definitely.

BTW, you are exactly right about The Hangover. Hilarious movie. Zach Galifianakis steals the movie, even with Bradley Cooper and Ed Helms both knocking it out of the park. Breakthrough performance from that guy.

Another good crowd movie. I haven't been in a big crowd that was laughing and smiling that much afterward since There's Something About Mary.

Medzie's quick movie roundup:

Up was fantastic. Possibly better than Wall-E, for me.
The Hangover was better than expected. Very funny, and Money is right, that Galifianakis guy steals the movie.
Drag Me to Hell was very entertaining. Not scary, but very funny. I openly cheered when she said "here kitty kitty."
Angels and Demons was mindless action - just like the book.

Best movie of the year is still, by far, Observe and Report.

I just saw it tonight. I agree and it wasn't completely dumb humor like TSAM, although it did have it's own low-brow moments.

If you see it, do stick around for the credits. It was one of the funniest parts of the movie.

Hangover is on par with old school and just an instant dvd to have. Liked it better then observe and report though.

Land of the Lost was ok but if you love Will Ferrel then you can appreciate the movie.

Terminator was very entertaining and the best surprise movie of the year is Drag Me to Hell. Didn't think it would be that good. Anytime a goat calls some one a F**ckin Whore is just gold comedy for me.

I don't love the first one so I went in not expecting much from the sequel, and I like it more than the original. Like you said, only ok, though. There's always something compelling about Ron Howard's flicks. I think he would have to try pretty hard to make a flat out shitty movie.

I saw the remake of Pelham 123 earlier today and it was good. It's definitely a Tony Scott/Denzel Washington film, and chances are, if you liked Man on Fire, you'll probably like this as well.

The plot is pretty much by the numbers and what you'd expect, and the final act is a little weak, but Denzel is great throughout. Travolta is actually pretty intense at times as the scenery-chewing villain. James Gandolfini is great as the mayor, and at first I thought he was just rehashing his Tony Soprano, but it's a different take.

Watch out, Lou...one time I used "scenery-chewing" as kind of a compliment regarding Jason Lee's ham sammich-y acting...

Has Washington actually restricted his range since winning the Oscar? Seems like the guy only plays coaches and cops now.
