Whale Wars is engaging. I wish there was more explanatory segments, tho. It's not always clear why something is happening. Here's a New Yorker story about the Sea Shepherd that was pretty interesting, but long:

Re explanatory parts -- I agree. In a sense, given how intense those encounters are, the episodes are "relatively" slow, with lots of unnecessary repetitions. They surely have enough room to go more in depth into many of the issues, maybe show the story from another angle (by introducing some interviews and the Japanese perspective), interviews with lawyers, etc.

Two quick things:
a) they need a faster ship
b) they need some long range weapons throwing their stinky liquids from much greater distances.

In the last episode of Whale Wars they showed the Harpoon ships dragging the dead whales alongside the ship. I was wondering why the Sea Shepherd didn't launch the Delta and Gemini to try and contaminate the whale. It seemed like they could have thrown some of that butyric acid on the whales while they were being dragged.

Looks like most of the rumors were right (except the one about Cersei - she hasn't been cast yet)

HBO appoints subjects to 'Thrones'

Quote:
HBO appoints subjects to 'Thrones'
Nikolaj Coster-Waldau joins Sean Bean in pilot
By James Hibberd
Aug 20, 2009, 11:00 PM ET

HBO is filling out the cast of its fantasy pilot "Game of Thrones" with the addition of former "New Amsterdam" star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and several others.

The group joins the previously cast lead Sean Bean as battle-weary Ned Stark, who leaves his home to serve the king. Mark Addy, Kit Harrington, Jennifer Ehle, Jack Gleeson, Peter Dinklage and Harry Lloyd also star.

In the adaptation of the George R.R. Martin fantasy-book series, Coster-Waldau will play Jaime Lannister, one of the king's guards and a ruthless usurper of the previous king. The actor, most recently seen in Ron Moore's Fox pilot "Virtuality," is repped by WME, Impression and Independent Talent Group.

Another addition is Tamzin Merchant (Showtime's "The Tudors"), who'll play Daenerys, an exiled teenage princess.

Also new to the cast: Richard Madden ("Hope Springs") as Stark's eldest son, Robb; Iain Glen ("Into the Storm") as Ser Jorah Mormont, a disgraced knight; Alfie Allen ("The Other Boleyn Girl") as Theon, Stark's young ward; Sophie Turner ("Doctor Who"), as Stark's eldest daughter, Sansa; Maisie Williams as Stark's young tomboy daughter, Arya.

The group joins the previously cast lead Sean Bean as battle-weary Ned Stark who leaves his home to serve the king, Mark Addy, Kit Harrington, Jennifer Ehle, Jack Gleeson, Peter Dinklage and Harry Lloyd.

HBO still has a few more roles to fill in the large ensemble cast of "Thrones," one of the more buzzed-about titles on the premium network's development slate. The pilot shoots in Ireland in October.

David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, Guymon Casady, Carolyn Strauss, Vincent Gerardis and Martin are executive producing.

I thought that there were too many harpoon ships around, and they must slow down to almost stanstill to unload their boats. So, they could not have done it (or thought that to be too risky). You may remember that, in one of the previous episodes, they had problems with picking up the boats.

I think their best bet is to design a long range weapon, some sort of catapult. They could use it to toss big containers (maybe sacks) with butric acid. They would break on the impact with any part of whaler's ship, even with protective nets. So, the entire decks would be sprayed with this stinky liquid.

Also, an attack from a ship os actually easier than an attack from asmall boat, because a deck is higher and also, yiu can find some level of protection from water hoses.

Of coiurse, small boats are faster, that's their advantage. Alkso, teh Dutch government requested from the captain not to use a ship as a platform for tossing anything on IshiMaru fleet. That's why Steve Ervin was forced to use small boats.

The last episode, the season finale, is very interesting. In an attempt to stop teh tranfer of the whale's dead carcass, Steve Ervin tries to manouver herself between a factory ship and a harpoon ship. The intention is to sever the transport line. At a certain momen, there is actually a collision between two ships whch leads to the whole huhe international bruhaha, Australian FBI is involve, and so on. The legal matters are still pending.

Maybe the most important bit of info, Japanese were 350 whales below their quote. So, Sea Sheperds actulally make some difference.

I read that Curb Your Enthusiasm is coming back after a year (or two?) layoff. I wonder if the story line is going to continue from where they left off?

Second episode of Mad Men was strong - better than the first. Anyone else notice that the wedding is planned for 11/23/1963? I can't wait to see how the show handles that.

True Blood also continues to be excellent.

The last two episodes of True Blood have been horrible, IMO. The storyline with the dark haired goddess/satan lady needs to be done with already. It's just really goofy.

I thought the episode before last was really strong, especially everything that happened with Godric. Last week's was a little goofy, but I think it was to add some levity before the last two episodes. I do like that there's someone too powerful for the vampires to handle. The last episode did have more Lafayette, which is always good. I think the next two episodes with the introduction of the Queen will be very interesting.

Oh my Godric!! I LOVED eppy 8 and the whole roof top scene with Eric.. I have to admit I cried...I know, I know...lame but dang, that was such a well acted scene. I actually like season 2 of True Blood more than season 1. The crazy Newlins storyline was great. I was sad to see Rev. Steve and his wife go...I couldn't stop repeating “The war has begun, you evil whore of Satan!” and then Jason paintballs him square on his forehead...priceless. Jason has been great this season, too...Sam and Andy Bellefleur...esp when he kept screaming PIIIIIIIIG! :)))

Curb is having the cast members of Seinfeld on the show and I read that Larry is trying to get back with Cheryl.

Mad Men is great as always. I liked the part last episode when Don tells his wife's bro what's going to happen with their Dad and then Don sits down at the kitchen table and reads the newspaper without missing a beat. It was just like a typical day at Sterling-Cooper, with Don doing what he does best.

True Blood has stepped up this season. I thought I read that Evan Rachel Wood is playing "The Queen." It will be interesting to see how the season plays out.

So it looks like the cast of Seinfeld will be playing (a version of) themselves on Curb and the storyline is that they are shooting a reunion special for Seinfeld.

I wonder if they'll have Michael Richards interact with The Blacks? I'm guessing they will address his meltdown.

Cersei Lannister has been cast.

Quote:
Royal HBO role filled by 'Terminator: Sarah Connor' actress

All the major roles for HBO's "Game of Thones" pilot have been filled in recent weeks -- except one.

I can exclusively reveal that Lena Headey, most recently seen as Sarah Connor in Fox's "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles," will play Cersei Lannister, a woman of royal blood who is every bit as smart, cunning and devious as the powerful men around her.

Other cast members include the perfectly cast Peter Dinklage as Cersei's brother Tyrion, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as Cersei's twin, Jaime, Sean Bean as aristocrat Ned Stark, Jennifer Ehle as his wife Catelyn Stark and Mark Addy as King Robert. HBO confirmed the casting of Headey on Tuesday.

The "Game of Thrones" pilot, an adaptation of a fantasy novel by George R.R. Martin, starts shooting in late October in Northern Ireland.

Interest in the "Thrones" pilot is already at fever pitch: The blogs Winter Is Coming and Westeros have been following the casting avidly, and I can see why.

One "Thrones" fan asked me if this level of interest in a pilot that may not show up on TV for a year or more is normal. No, it's not. But Martin's book series tends to inspire a certain kind of deep and abiding loyalty, if not obsession. To read the books of Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" series (four have come out so far) is to be completely immersed in a world that recalls the golden age of knights and chivalry while also showing, through memorable and believable characters, how deeply flawed human nature can be. It's a world in which honor and fealty don't mean what they used to and those in power have to contend with an array of threats, sometimes from those closest to them, sometimes from unexpected places.

Don't let the fantasy label put you off. This is a book series about human beings and how they respond to difficult challenges. But OK, there are knights, tournaments, battles, bawdy humor, spectacles and freaky creatures from the icy north. There are also deeply moving relationships and wonderfully detailed locales, all of which kept me turning hundreds of pages all summer.

As Time's James Poniewozik has written, "Thrones" is the kind of complicated, richly appointed, adult drama that HBO tends to do well. Martin "constantly forces you to question whether the 'honorable' resolution to a conflict is the best in the long run. The saga is littered with fallen heroes and shattered myths, as well as apparent villains and rogues who make surprising turns," Poniewozik writes.

In short, if this "Thrones" adaptation is at least as good as HBO's "Rome," I'll be glued to it. Here's where I inject the note of caution: At this point, "Thrones" is just a pilot and it has not yet been picked up to series. Fingers crossed that its every bit as good as Martin's many fans hope it will be and we spend 2010 obsessing about HBO's cool new show.

It's pretty funny. Definitely a nice change of pace with The Office becoming more cartoonish, but I don't know if the mean-spiritedness will last. Joel McHale (the lead) has decent timing, so I think he'll grow into the role. He's good on The Soup.

Mad Men has been just fantastic the last two weeks. Really, really strong episodes. I was laughing for a good 2-3 minutes at Sterling's "just when he got it in the door" comment. Based on the timeline, Kennedy's assassination should be coming up soon - that will be really interesting to watch.

Community is kinda funny. Did they change the lead female from the one in the pilot? I remember her being more attractive. Yes, I'm shallow like that.

Parks and Recs has it's moments, but it's mostly miss.

They're called DVDs (also Blu-rays). They have them at these things called stores and even at these newfangled website thingies.

Mad Men goes on sale fairly often, so you should be able to get both seasons for $20 or less a piece.

What about you, Lou? Does it make you nostalgic for your 20's?
Yes, in much the same way that Lord of the Rings makes you miss the Shire.

As far as Mad Men itself, the show seems kind of uneven to me right now. The office-based stuff has been fantastic, maybe the best it's ever been, but the home-based stuff has been pretty off. When a show feels the need to start relying on dream sequences, I think it's gone off the rails a bit.

Apparently the dream sequence is very accurate, as women in the 60's and 70's were given a drug that caused hallucinations during delivery.

I think the 1st episode of this season was the best of the series so far. Pretty frigging funny, with the penguins' gay marriage.

Mad Men reminds me of all the cool kids at school liking Sonic Youth. I WANT to like it, it seems "ok", but if I'm being honest I don't really get the big deal about it.

It hasn't been the only dream sequence this year. There was Don seeing things in his kitchen. Still a very good show, and that's really just a minor criticism.

I have to think that this season ends with Don either assuming control of Sterling Cooper or going out on his own. It looks like a lot of the characters are being pushed out -- Don not having the patience for the economics of the business, Roger being left off the flow chart, Peggy and Pete being offered a new home by Duck, and maybe Joan already gone permanently from Sterling Cooper.

And then there's Paris Hilton's great-granddad advising Don to "think bigger."

I concur with this statement

Fringe is my show, the best show on TV. JJ Abrams stopped caring about Lost years ago, Fringe is where his energy has been put into.

Sam Dav has to love Fringe

My top 5 shows

Fringe

Sons of Anarchy

Curb

Weeds

Californication

Really, Weeds and Californication are hit or miss.... but SoA and Fringe are amazing shows both in their second season right now.
