I heard a few songs off of that tonight and they did sound pretty good. It's odd though, when a band replaces a singer with another singer that is trying to have the sound of the original singer.

I don't like it much. Kinda boring, and sounds like a cover band with a great guitarist. But I hate it when singers try to "do" a pre-existing singer. For instance, Brian Johnson sounds nothing like Bon Scott, and it works.

But I admit, I never have liked AIC much. Just not dynamic enough for me, pretty much the same mood relentlessly. Dig Mad Season, though.

BY FAR my favorite Layne Staley track, and one beautiful song:
My pain is self-chosen
At least, so The Prophet says
I could either burn
Or cut off my pride and buy some time
A head full of lies is the weight, tied to my waist

The River of Deceit pulls down
The only direction we flow is down
Down, oh down

My pain is self-chosen
At least I believe it to be
I could either drown
Or pull off my skin and swim to shore
Now I can grow a beautiful shell for all to see

The River of Deceit pulls down
The only direction we flow is down
Down, oh down

Our pain is self-chosen

Reminds me of a Roky Erickson clip I saw a while back. Much better guitar playing here, though. Roky barely even tries to play cleanly live. He rules, though.

I dig it. And honestly, it illustrates my point in a way. Listen to the melody and the different way the chords can go with it. It's a pretty good, well written song. And this is a very cool version, I agree.

Though I'm pretty bored with all the cutesy female singing lately. And I don't like the way she sings the "oh oh oh" part as a result. It's too self aware for me.

Here's a repetitive pop tune from a few years ago that I like a lot better. I think I like the girl better than Beyonce as well. Yep, I do.

The Beyonce tune is catchy, no doubt. I just wasn't moved by the video. And I agree about cutesy mugging. Pretty played out.

Man, that's SUPER repetitive, music and all. Sounds like Beyonce lite to me. It's ok, though. Not much to it. Lots of percussion.

It's called a hook and THAT time it worked. Also, the percussion helps it work too.

Beyonce: 2 "Single ladies" intros, 3 verses, 1 bridge, 6 choruses.

Amarie: 2 "Knock Knock" intros, 2 verses, 1 bridge, 5 choruses.

Doesn't really break down into being "super repetitive" compared to Beyonce.

The "music" is more repetitive. Much more. It's drums (the same beat all the way through) and the same 4 chords. It's produced really well. The drums sound great.

It's all good, though. To each their own. Just seemed like a weird song to combat the repetitive nature and perceived dirty dancing of the Beyonce tune/video. It's like a less musical version of a Beyonce song. Just calling it how I see it, son.

I just had heard it and thought "Well, this is repetitive (like the Beyonce song) AND it's good." A much more dynamic, energetic song....and video, for that matter.....save the robo-glove of course.

Blueprint 3 is decent. I just wish Jigga would have had more singles and not as many guest apperances. The more Jigga, the better.

Reasonable Doubt #1 with The Blueprint very close behind. I think The trio of Heart of the City, Never Change and Song Cry is one of the best 1, 2 , 3 punches in the history of Rap music.

I think decent is a good review of JayZ's latest. At first, I liked the Empire State of Mind song but now I am already getting annoyed by it.

I actually went to go see my friend open up for Antipop Consortium a month ago and they blow new JayZ stuff away...and I love Jay Z. Seriously, pure, raw hip hop. Beans and Sayyid just killed it on the mike. I wish they played more stuff like that on the radio.

I picked up Ray LaMontagne's first CD, Trouble. I've heard most of the songs on Pandora, but hearing them all together really demonstrates what a great songwriter and singer this guy is. Perhaps a bit too somber at times, but pretty damn good from start to finish. Highly recommend if you like acoustic music.

Yeah, they're good. I posted her version of "Single Ladies" in the exchange about Beyonce. She's cute but she has to stop making google-eyes at the camera every take.

I know AIC well enough to know Layne vs. Jerry. I'll give the album another listen to see if I hear the replacement guy the way you did.

Not trying to say you don't know the music. I guess I'll say IMO he sounds nothing like Layne.. nor does he sound like he is trying to sound like Layne. I've listen to the entire album and seen them live about 2 months ago.. Even the songs that everyone says on the new album he is trying to sound like Layne the people are wrong.

Take for instance Check My Brain. Mostly all of that is Jerry... Jerry is singing the majority of the lead in that song and DeVall is singing the harmonys. Now ok.. when they were singing their old stuff was he singing like Layne.. Yea.. but that's a double edge sword.. You get him singing different you are going to have a bunch of fans pissed that they changed the singing style of the song..

e.g. when they were singing Rain When I Die at the concert.. First of all DeVall doesn't have the vocal range to even sing like Layne.. he could not hit the high notes on the chorus.. low notes he has trouble with also. I guess I just don't hear it when people hear the new stuff and say he is trying to sing like him.. If anything the first thing I thought was that the dude was singing like Hendrix and later found out that he was a Hendrix impersonator earlier in his career. So.. Can he sing like Layne.. and does he on the old stuff.. Yea.. that's probably a good part of the reason why they picked him.. Does try and sound like Layne on the new album? I don't hear it.. but perhaps that's just me and everyone else is right.

I wouldn't have minded them just having Jerry sing but I guess they wanted the harmonies.

Blasphemy! Do you know how many drag queens and Vegas acts would be out of jobs if not for Cher and I actually like her weird off-tune singing.
